Bingo in Fort Scott, Kansas: A Review
History of the Game
Bingo is a game of chance in which each player matches numbers printed in different arrangements on randomly drawn cards with the numbers the game host (caller) draws at random, marking the selected numbers with tokens. When a player matches a pre-drawn pattern, they call out “Bingo!” to alert all other players to stop marking their cards, and they win the prize. The game is usually played with one or more rectangular cards with a marked grid on each card, containing numbers ranging from 1 to 75 and arranged in five columns of fifteen numbers each.
How to Play
The caller randomly draws numbers and calls them out, e.g., “B-12”. The players look for the corresponding number on their cards and mark it off using a marker, such as a pen or pencil. When a player find the selected number on their card, they mark it off. When a player has five numbers in a row marked off horizontally, vertically, or diagonally (a “bingo”), they call out “Bingo!” to alert the other players to stop marking their cards. The game is then over, and the caller collects all the markers. The caller then checks their card to see if they have won (by having five numbers in a row) and if so, they collect the prize. If no one has won, the caller continues drawing and calling numbers until someone does.
